Important Update: O2 to Discontinue Support for New 2G/3G Device Activations

Follow

Dear Customer,

If your devices are not reliant on O2’s 2G or 3G services in the UK, please disregard this message

As part of our ongoing efforts to future proof your deployments and ensure seamless connectivity, we are writing to inform you about critical changes regarding NEW SIM activations on the O2 and O2 Global networks.

What is changing?

O2 have informed all service providers that, starting October 2024, they will no longer accept NEW SIM activations for devices that only support 2G/3G.

While there will be no impact on connectivity for existing 2G devices for quite some time, O2 is asking all users of their network to start the journey towards transitioning away from legacy technologies. We want to assure you that we have alternative solutions available to help you make a smooth transition and avoid any disruptions in the future.

What impact will this have for you?

If you are an O2 or O2 Global user deploying devices in the UK, here’s how this will affect you:

  • Existing devices that only support 2G: Your current devices will continue to function as they do today until O2 closes its UK 2G services. While no final date for the 2G closure has been set, the UK government aims for all networks to complete this by 2033.
  • Existing devices that support 3G:  3G services will degrade leading up to O2’s 3G shutdown at the end of 2025. After this, devices reliant on 3G connectivity will fall back to 2G.
  • New SIM Activations: O2 will not accept new SIM activations for devices that are only 2G/3G compatible starting October 2024. While the O2 and O2 Global SIMs we supply will continue to support 2G and 3G fallback in 4G devices, they should not be installed in 2G (and/or 3G) only devices.

What will happen if I activate NEW SIMs in devices that only support 2G/3G?

Continued activation of new SIMs into devices that only support 2G/3G may ultimately lead to O2 halting SIM supply for customers and (in extreme) cases, ceasing support for 2G devices in the field.

What actions should you take?

We are here to help you navigate this transition and assist in identifying the most suitable solutions for your needs. Whether you need guidance on adjusting device designs or selecting alternative technologies, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your account manager. Our team is ready to work closely with you to ensure a smooth and seamless transition.

Mobile Network Operators worldwide have already begun, or are in the process of, phasing out 2G and 3G services. For more information on global network sunsetting activities, click here.
